Talented Ladies Club – Why we need a holistic approach to stamp out unconscious biases in the workplace

Talented Ladies Club – Why we need a holistic approach to stamp out unconscious biases in the workplace

Despite the best of us professing that we do not hold any kind of bias within our decision making processes or initial judgements, it is highly likely that some unconscious biases or learned behaviours have made an impression upon our perceptions or actions. This is not to say that those who harbour these biases are bad people and have made these decisions consciously – often these judgements and decision-making processes happen without us even realising! Start Your Business – 5 Ways to Embed D&I into your Business

It’s not unusual for diversity and inclusion initiatives to rise to the top of the leadership agenda particularly when deadlines loom on the horizon, especially those that involve a level of external scrutiny. However, creating a workplace environment which is inclusive for its employees isn’t synonymous with large companies but is as relevant to companies of all sizes and  at all growth stages from start up to scale up.    Policies and procedures can be beneficial for raising awareness, however these alone are not enough for embedding diversity and inclusion across all aspects of your business.  (more…)...

Talk Business – 24 Ways to Support your Employees on World Mental Health Day24 Ways to Support your Employees on World Mental Health Day

Mental health has been moved top of the agenda in recent years. On World Mental Health Day employers need to move mental health to the top of the discussion, understand and work out how to support their employees on a daily basis. World Mental Health Day has been around since 1992, promoting advocacy, education and awareness against the social stigma of poor mental health in the workplace. Businesses should use World Mental Health Day to open up conversations around mental health. Unlike other injuries and illnesses, mental health is not easily using a pill or medication. It takes acceptance and constant support from the people around us. As most of us spend a third of our life in an office surrounded by our colleagues it takes a lot to breach the social stigma and talk about our mental health. This is why the workplace should use World Mental Health Day effectively to break down barriers and support employees in their struggles. So, as a...

HR Grapevine – Enabling your disabled talent

HR Grapevine – Enabling your disabled talent

I was pleased to comment on this important subject. HR must differentiate learning for employees with impairments - but how should this work? There are 13.9 million disabled people in the UK. Yet research conducted in 2018 by disability charity Leonard Cheshire discovered that nearly a quarter of all UK employers admit that they would be discouraged from hiring candidates with impairments, whilst a shocking 66% of respondents cited the cost of workplace adjustments as the key reasons for their hesitance – believing that doing so would make a detrimental impact on their bottom line. The charity also found that 17% of disabled candidates who had applied for a job in the past five years said the employer withdrew the job offer as a result of their disability – mainly because making adjustments to workplace structure and education simply wasn’t something the employer was willing to do. These pieces of research evidence just how hard it can be for disabled employees to enter...

HRD Connect – Prioritise Employee Wellbeing, not just Absence Numbers

Teresa Boughey, Founder & CEO, Jungle HR discusses ways in which companies can ensure that they are prioritising the wellbeing of their workforce. We need to move away from sickness and absence and place the focus on health and wellbeing. Often health and wellbeing are viewed as a tick box exercise and/or a legal requirement/obligation instead of an essential way to ensure the inclusive wellbeing of your workplace.  Similarly, it’s important to take care of employees after they return to work from absence and to ensure they are supported.   Whilst there are, of course, cost implications associated with employee absence, it’s also important to take into account the human factor; to explore the impact of any absenteeism and take care of the people involved. This article will offer guidance on how to put health and wellbeing at the top of your agenda. Absenteeism A healthy workforce is a happy workforce and leads to reduced absence, higher employee engagement, and improved business performance.  Employee wellbeing...
