An ally is someone interested in advocating for the rights of others, someone who wants to support and improve the outcomes for those who are perhaps in the minority within the workplace or underrepresented within certain roles. Shame on Disney for Smashing the Glass Slipper

Shame on Disney for Smashing the Glass Slipper

I took my granddaughter (7), to the cinema over the weekend. It was a rare and pleasant opportunity for the two of us to spend some quality time together. We chose a film, Hotel Transylvania 3, purchased the tickets and our popcorn, and made our way to the cinema screen. We were comfortably seated as the lights dimmed and trailers commenced for the exciting a preview of films to come. This part for me is almost as exciting as a film.  It provides an opportunity to see what new films are coming out, and often it's during these film trailers that we make plans for future cinema visits. Poldark Actress Questions Gender Pay Gap

Poldark Actress Questions Gender Pay Gap

OK... I love watching Poldark! Equally so does my husband, my friends and my mother and father-in law. Yet even this addictive Sunday night viewing doesn’t seem to be unscathed from the ever-increasing diversity and gender gap debates. On screen of late, Demelza Poldark appears to be holding the fort in Cornwall, running the mining business as well as running the home and being mother to two. She is also seen positively influencing important wealthy dignitaries for her husband as he takes up his seat in as an MP in Westminster. (more…)...

Gender equality in the boardroom

Gender equality in the boardroom

My take on Gender Equality is featured this month is Shropshire Business, I’ve heard some excuses in my time, but never those more shocking than ‘The Top 10 worst excuses for not appointing women executives’ which featured on BBC News (31st May 2018).  These so called ‘explanations’, from a range of chairs and CEOs were heard by the team behind the government-backed Hampton-Alexander Review, as the review reaches it halfway stage. The review was established to increase the number of women in senior positions and has challenged all FTSE companies to ensure at least a third of their board members and leadership are women by 2020. The Top 10 worst ‘explanations’ included: I don't think women fit comfortably into the board environment There aren't that many women with the right credentials and depth of experience to sit on the board - the issues covered are extremely complex Most women don't want the hassle or pressure of sitting on a board Read more in Shropshire Businesses...

A New Take on the Role of CFO

A New Take on the Role of CFO

The Recruitment and HR media have been quick to pick up on an interesting news story this week (4th July 2018) regarding a ‘pioneering Tech Company’ advertising for an interim CFO.  But this time it's not a Chief Financial Officer… it’s a Chief Feminism officer (CFO). Spurred on by increasing government and media interest in gender equality the advert stated that the hiring organisation, having investigated how it treats its female workforce, found that the firm was in fact ‘part of the problem’. A bold move indeed to put the spotlight and focus on one role to improve diversity in the workplace.  Whilst this affirmative action is to be applauded it raises some questions in my mind as to whether there was a better way to create an inclusive and diverse culture.
