Do you ever stop and take a moment and consider … the coffee travel mug you’re carrying… ah, you’re a Starbucks drinker, the breakfast cereals you ate this morning, ah you’re a Weetabix fan, the new suit you bought for your important meeting….. Armani?
Well, the reality is that we are all well and truly branded! We fall in love with these brands, in some instances we aspire to be like these brands, some of them make us feel safe, special, and important even. But what about you? What about your brand? What does it currently say about you?
Don’t think of yourself as a brand? Well you should! Because branding isn’t just for the large organisations or for celebrities, it’s for everyone. Regardless of age, position, the industry you happen to be in, we should all think about the importance of our personal branding. To be in business today, our most important job is to become the CEO’s of our own company ‘Me Plc’.
Build Your Brand
So if you were going to start building your brand, the starting point is to ask yourself what does your brand stand for?
- What are your values?
- What is important to you?
- What’s your areas of expertise?
- What are you good at?
- What makes you different?
- How far does your impact and reach span?
- How do you stand out from the crowds?
Now write down what you consider your brand to be in 15-word-or-less and read it back to yourself (several times!). If your answer wouldn’t light up the eyes of a prospective client, command attention or worst of all if it doesn’t grab you, then it’s time to give some serious thought and even more serious effort to imagining and developing your personal brand.
A Winning Formula
If you want to supercharge your chances of enhancing your brand then I highly recommend Brand you: Turn Your Unique Talents into a Winning Formula – John Purkiss and David Royston-Lee. This book covers all of the steps essential for helping you consider and build your personal brand and is one that I often recommend to the Executives I coach who are looking to enhance their effectiveness and progress with their careers.
There’s no right or wrong way to create the brand called ‘you’, but if you are serious about standing out from the crowd then you need to start somewhere and there’s no better time than now.
